Atherton Season – Winter 2018-2019

Welcome to HPR’s Atherton Performing Arts Studio.

The Atherton Studio seats 60 to 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The intimate performances are like sitting in on a private studio recording session. All concerts are on Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, unless otherwise noted. Advance ticket purchase is strongly encouraged, as Atherton events are frequently sold-out before the performance date.

Parking:
Metered on-street parking is available or paid lots at First Hawaiian Bank (Kapi?olani branch) and the Pan Am Building. Please do not park in the Don Quijote parking lot. Click here for a map

The 2018-19 Winter Atherton Season   

March 2 - Lowbiscus 
The Lowbiscus band (formerly "High & Lonesome") plays a type of “Digressive Bluegrass," old time and folk music. SOLD OUT!

October 31st – Spooky Tales with Jeff Gere and Friends
Storyteller Jeff Gere and friends kick off the Atherton Season on Halloween with a collection of chilling ghost stories from Hawai?i and the Pacific. SOLD OUT!

November 4th (4pm) - John Cruz
John Cruz returns to the Atherton! Island Style and all! SOLD OUT

November 17th- Nalu Collective
The Nalu Collective crosses over music genres to create their own forward-leaning, jazz-informed style.  The ensemble of some of Hawai?i’s top musicians is led by guitarist Jim Guss, with vocalist Rachel Gonzales, pianist Bailey Matsuda, and a versatile rhythm section comprised of Scott Shafer on drums and Mark Tanouye on bass. November 24 - Beat-Lele
Your favorite Beatles songs… re-imagined on the ?ukulele. SOLD OUT

December 1 - Amanda Frazier and The Keepers 
Singer-songwriter Amanda Frazier comes to the Atherton for her first solo show. She’ll showcase original folk/pop tunes that draw inspiration from artists like Michelle Branch, Over the Rhine, and Brooke Fraser. 

December 8 - John Keawe
John Keawe returns to the Atherton after a long hiatus to delight audiences with his unique brand of Big Island slack key and hula featuring Hope Keawe. Pre-show reception at the HPR studios with the Keawes and Kanikapila Sunday host Derrick M?lama. Reception 6:30-7p, house open for seating 7p, performance 7:30p. Tickets $30 per seat available to HPR members only.  SOLD OUT

December 15 - Kupa'?ina
Kupa??ina was originally the name for every ad hoc band that Kevin Chang ever played with in Hawai?i, on the West Coast, or in Japan. Today it references a range of themes created by a hui of people. The genesis of Kupa??ina ’s style lay in its common love for traditional Hawaiian and the music of the people of Hawai?i. This expanded into creative explorations into and inspirations from Polynesian, rock and roll, reggae, funk, Latin, ska, hip-hop, and other influences. While eclectic, Kupa??ina’s music remains rooted in the local experience, history, and culture.

December 22 - Leche De Tigre
Leche De Tigre make the walls of the Atherton pulse Saturday Dec 22 with their adrenalized latin percussive rhythms, driving funk foundation and flairs of Spanish, gypsy and rock-inspired arrangements. Their potent concoction of groove music is sure to trigger long lasting excitement and good-times enjoyment with this extra lively performance.

January 5, 2019 - Men in Grey Suits
Men in Grey Suits keep the tradition of breezy surf rock alive with their debut in HPR’s Atherton Studio. SOLD OUT

January 12 - Patty Clayton
Patty Clayton has been recognized as having “a voice as pure as the prairie wind” and is known for putting her own brand on Western and bluegrass music as a performing songwriter based out of Colorado.  Patty’s original "Buckaroo Ballads," bluegrass and Western swing songs celebrate the present and the yesteryear of the American West. She’s joined by Caroline Pond on fiddle from the Snake Oil Medicine Show band in Asheville, Steve Ryan from the Hilobillies, and upright bassist Jan Willis, a founding member of the Voggy Mountain Ramblers and Saddle Road bluegrass bands. January 19th - Discord and Rye
At the center of the exploding Americana movement in Honolulu is Discord & Rye, a roots-rock group of musicians dedicated to exploring the history and future of original American music. With solid foundations in folk, bluegrass, blues, and rock, Discord & Rye has taken roots music off of the porch and into Honolulu’s revered whiskey joints. Their sound is honest, feel-good music with timeless qualities. SOLD OUT

January 26 - Aja Gample
Aja Gample is a slack-key virtuoso making her debut in the Atherton Studio.  She’ll be sharing music from her new CD which is an explosion of original Hawaiian music and playful Tahitian covers. SOLD OUT

February 9 - Reggie Padilla 
Saxophonist Reggie Padilla makes his solo debut in the Atherton with a set of jazz and pop standards. He's also composed some original pieces specifically for this evening and you'll get to be a part of the making of the live album of this concert -- with video!

February 16 - Ebb & Flow Ensemble
Ebb & Flow Arts celebrates its 20th anniversary season with a multifaceted concert of new music featuring the Ebb & Flow Ensemble, comprised of Ignace Jang, violin; Sung Chan Chang, cello; and Robert Pollock, piano.  They’ll be performing selections from a musical cultural exchange with South Korean composers.  More details at: 

February 23 - Partners in Time
Partners in Time returns to the Atherton Studio for a concert of music from the Balkans and the Near/Middle East—particularly Armenia, Turkey, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Greece—with some original tunes and jazz fusion thrown into the mix. The band incorporates improvisation into many tunes, a practice common to both Balkan/Middle Eastern music and jazz.
