THIS IS NEW ORLEANS
On June 3 and 4, a door will open on Maui teleporting all who enter straight to the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA). Second line parades with “Lil Liza Jane,” Mardi Gras struts with “Big Chief,” French Quarter frolicking while “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley”. . . all this and more will be present and palpable as Grammy-Award-Winning piano master Jon Cleary takes center stage at ProArts Maui’s exquisite, petite theatre.
Hailing from the Crescent City, arguably the greatest music town in the world, Cleary has risen to the top of the mountain, currently standing as the torchbearer of NOLA’s signature instrument and sound. He sits beside and embodies both the music and spirit of piano legends Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, James Booker, Huey Piano Smith, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton and many more. ‘Cleary is the 8th wonder of the world’ - Bonnie Raitt
In 2017, Jon Cleary won the GRAMMY Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album for his record “Go Go Juice,” giving Cleary worldwide recognition as one of the greats of our time, something stars like Keith Richards, Taj Mahal and Boz Scaggs have known for decades.
Another of Cleary’s superpowers is his uncanny mastery of seemingly the entirety of NOLA’s musical cannon! His solo piano concerts showcase, in stunning fashion, NOLA’s musical history from start to finish: rhumbas (a descendant of Cuban habaneras), boogie woogie, blues, gospel, R&B, jazz, funk, and more - all with a unifying thread, that syncopated groove that screams NEW ORLEANS and makes you wanna shake it ‘til you break it.
‘Listen, we got a guy by the name of Johnny Cleary . . . He’s got the spirit.’ - Dr. John
Get ready for a joyous romp through the streets, neighborhoods, homes, bars, brothels, restaurants, clubs and kitchens of New Orleans. Jon Cleary is bringing his extra special jambalaya to town, and it’s sure to be one of the most onolicious treats of the year.
“New Orleans music is really about three things: good songs, good funk and a good time.” - Jon Cleary
