The Maui Humane Society is urgently requesting foster homes for dogs.
The shelter is overcapacity due to the high surrender and stray intake rates that spiked because of the pandemic.
There are currently more than 500 animals under the care of the Humane Society. That is 25% more compared to the same month last year.
Many of these animals are not ready for adoption and need care outside of a shelter until they are ready, hence the need for fostering. Homes that already have another pet are encouraged to apply. All food and medical expenses for the dog will be covered.
"One thing that people probably notice is that if a dog or cat stays too long in a kennel or a cage, they start to go downhill," said Steve MacKinnon, the CEO of Maui Humane Society.
"To put them into a foster home where there’s a family, where there’s activity, and what we want to get them used to. So when an adoptive family comes along, those are all positive things for the outcome for that particular pet," MacKinnon explained.
