A first circuit court judge has reaffirmed a state plan to save Hawaiian honeycreepers by managing mosquito populations. Judge John Tonaki approved what’s known as an Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT), which would focus on reducing avian malaria in east Maui.

Federal and state agencies say a project to release incompatible mosquitoes to protect Kauaʻi's native birds will have no significant adverse effects on the environment. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released a draft environmental assessment on the project this week.
